Overview
This consultation is seeking feedback on the potential application of the Energy Industry Jobs Plan (EIJP) in the context of the scheduled closure of Eraring Power Station.
The EIJP is a legislative framework that ensures workers at closing coal-fired and gas-fired power stations can access supports from their employers to prepare for and transition into their next job. Where the EIJP is put in place, employers will be required to provide their employees with supports including access to training, career planning and financial advice. The EIJP can include the owner or operator of the power station, as well as businesses within the supply chain that will be substantially impacted (for example, a coal mine that supplies a power station).
For the EIJP to be implemented, in the years leading up to a power station closure, the Authority is required to undertake an assessment process to determine if the EIJP is needed for that closure, and which employers should be included, informed by broad consultation.
This consultation seeks stakeholders’ views on applying the EIJP framework to support workers at businesses impacted by the closure of Eraring Power Station, a coal-fired power station in the Lake Macquarie area owned and operated by Origin Energy. The power station is scheduled to close in August 2027.
The Authority is seeking your feedback to understand how workers and businesses are likely to be impacted by the closure, what support workers can already access, and whether an EIJP will help smooth the transition for those workers.
Your feedback will help inform the Authority’s assessment of whether the EIJP should be implemented for Eraring’s closure and which employers should be included and required to provide transition supports to their workers.
