Overview

The Australian Government is now reviewing the rules around measurement markings on packaging.

Part 4 of the National Trade Measurement Regulations 2009 governs measurement markings that show customers the exact weight or volume of the product they are buying. For example, the “330ml” mark on a can of soft drink is a measurement marking.

Why your views matter

We are consulting to understand the importance of the measurement marking to customers and to gather views from both customers and businesses on its location and prominence on product labels.

An online survey was conducted as part of the larger review. The survey provided an opportunity for interested members of the public to provide an input into the review specific to the measurement mark. The online survey is now closed.

A summary of the online survey results are published below:

The survey included some of the questions used by ORIMA, who were engaged by the Department of Industry, Innovation and Science to conduct market research to understand the acceptability of the public to a relaxing of the regulations governing the measurement mark. View the findings of the ORIMA survey.

If you have comments about other aspects of Part 4, please visit the Review of the National Trade Measurement Regulations 2009, Part 4: Packaging to provide your view on the wider review subject matter.

What happens next

Thank you for your interest in the review of the Measurement Mark. This consultation is now closed. The Department of Industry, Innovation and Science is now assessing submissions and will consider possible reform actions in due course. Further updates on the review can be found at the department's Packaging Review website.
