Overview
We’re developing a Sustainable Ocean Plan for Australia. The plan will help us work across governments, industries, research organisations, conservation groups and communities to better manage Australia’s ocean. It will chart a course for Australia to meet the increasingly complex challenges that face our ocean and the $118.5 billion ‘blue economy’ that relies on it.
As a member of the High Level Panel for a Sustainable Ocean Economy, Australia’s Prime Minister committed to:
developing the plan
sustainably managing 100% of Australia’s ocean.
The goals of sustainable ocean management are to ensure:
a healthy and resilient ocean where our unique marine environment is effectively protected and managed
ocean industries are environmentally sustainable, socially responsible and economically prosperous
inclusive and diverse decision-making processes are in place so that the benefits from ocean resources are shared, now and for future generations.
How we drafted the plan
We engaged with First Nations people, marine industries, the research community, all levels of governments, natural resource managers, conservation organisations and other ocean users.
This has helped us understand:
the challenges facing our ocean, ocean managers and custodians, and ocean users
emerging opportunities
current projects, policies and frameworks that are working well.
We’ve used this understanding to draft the plan, including:
a shared national vision for 2040
priority areas where efforts will be most effective
opportunities for national action.
