Consultation on the Reforestation by Environmental or Mallee Plantings method 2024
Overview
The Reforestation by Environmental or Mallee Plantings method determination 2024 was made on 18 November 2024. The method replaces the 2014 method of the same name which expired on 30 September 2024.
While the 2024 method largely remakes the 2014 method, some changes have been made to improve integrity and ease of use. Updates from the 2014 method include:
In lieu of newness provisions to allow project activities to commence after project application – consistent with other land sector methods. The (now expired) 2014 method only allowed project activities after project declaration.
Limited commercial harvest of seeds: The 2024 method allows a maximum of 20% of seeds to be harvested each year, provided this does not impact forest potential, forest cover and biodiversity values. The (now expired) 2014 method did not allow any seed to be harvested.
Inclusion of a Reforestation Management Plan: Unlike the 2014 method, the 2024 method requires many of the record keeping and reporting requirements to occur through a management plan that is maintained and updated over the life of the crediting period.
Expanded eligibility for infill plantings: Unlike the 2014 method, the 2024 method allows infill planting to encourage establishment, promote biodiversity and allow for participation in future Nature Repair Market Scheme methods.
Planting spacing requirements have been partially relaxed compared to the 2014 method to reflect modern practices and allow for variation in site conditions.
