Public consultation on the topic is closed.
We sought feedback from people on the draft Illegal Logging Prohibition Rules 2024 (rules). This included timber importers and processors, customs brokers, NGOs and other interested parties.
We will consider the feedback received and adjust the draft rules as needed before their finalisation and making into law. It’s intended that the final rules will come into effect and replace the current Regulation sometime ahead of its expiry on April 1, 2025.
The exact timing for when the Regulation will cease, and the final rules will come into effect is not yet determined, however, we anticipate a transition period sometime before April 2025, and we will provide updates via our website and the illegal logging e-updates.

On Thursday, 29 August 2024 we held a webinar to explain the draft rules, the reforms and the consultation process. Stakeholders provided valuable feedback on the rules which will help us take this work forward.
Please note that the rules are yet to be finalised and timeframes for when they will come into effect are subject to the reforms process currently before Parliament. Until then, the requirements of the Regulation remain in force. We will provide guidance, including on timeframes on transitioning to the new legal requirements, once the legislative reform process has progressed through Parliament and a decision on making the Rules has occurred. A recording of the webinar and presentation slides are now provided below.
