Mandatory industry codes on scams consultation

The Government has committed to introduce new mandatory industry codes to outline the responsibilities of the private sector in relation to scam activity, with a focus on banks, digital communication platforms and telecommunications providers.

Treasury and the Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development, Communications and the Arts (DITRDCA) are seeking feedback on a proposed Scams Code Framework, which would introduce obligations for these key sectors.

Consultation period: 30 November 2023 29 January 2024

Interested stakeholders are invited to comment on the issues raised in the consultation paper by 29 January 2024. Submissions can be uploaded in this website. For accessibility reasons, please submit responses in a Word, RTF, or PDF format.

A short survey is also available for members of the public who prefer to provide information about their experience with scams than lodge a submission.

Submissions will be shared with other Government agencies where necessary for the purposes of progressing policy work on scams. All information (including name details) contained in submissions may be made publicly available on the Australian Treasury website unless you indicate that you would like all or part of your submission to remain in confidence. Automatically generated confidentiality statements in emails are not sufficient for this purpose.

If you would like only part of your submission to remain confidential, please provide this information clearly marked as such in your attachment. Legal requirements, such as those imposed by the Freedom of Information Act 1982, may affect the confidentiality of your submission.
