Monash University and Wallara are currently running a STEAM program to engage people with disabilities in activities and to provide evidence of how to break down the barriers to engagement. It is an example of research that is providing evidence of what is possible
1: Distance: The research involves taking the STEAM program to the people with disabilites to reduce the travel and environmental barrier to participation.
2: Tools: Developing accessible tools to enable people with different abilities to undertake activities. Sometimes it is the tools or accepted way to participate that is the barrier and there a many diverse ways to achive the same goal.
3: Relevant: We have created STEAM activities relevant to the participants with disabilities so that they see it as relevant to their lives.
One example is that people who can't speak can program robots. We only know because we gave them the opportunity.
Is there anything else you’d like to tell us?
