Public consultation on the Export Control Rules 2021: Proposed Improvements 2025 has closed.

How you had your say

The department undertook targeted and public consultation with internal and external stakeholders for feedback on proposed amendments to the Export Control Rules 2021 for animals, eggs, fish, meat, milk, organics, poultry, rabbit and ratite, and wild game.

Background

The Export Control Act 2020 and Export Control Rules 2021 (‘the Rules’) came into effect in March 2021 replacing more than 20 Acts and 40 legislative instruments. The Act and Rules form the over-arching legislative framework for the regulation of exported goods from Australia. It underpins our reputation as a supplier of safe and reliable food and other products. The department continually reviews the Rules to ensure the framework remains modern, fit-for-purpose and meets the needs of exporters.

Public consultation on identified areas for improvement to the Rules was conducted between 19 May 2025 and 20 June 2025.

What happens next

The department will use feedback to make sure the Rules continue to meet the needs of Australian exporters and support the effective export of our agricultural goods.

  • All consultation submissions will be considered and collated.

  • A consultation report will be released (submissions received will be published if permission has been provided).

  • We will amend, lodge and publish the amended Rules, considering feedback received.

  • Once the updated Rules are published, they will be implemented.
